JAN OBLAK CARRYING SLOVENIA FLAG HIGH IN SPAIN

Jan Oblak is a special player, the Atletico Marid stopper is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in Spain for good reasons. The Slovenia International has grown into the number one position at the Wanda Metro politano and has continued his great form this season.

Oblak began his career in Slovenia third division and has seen a rise in his playing career. He moved to Benfica at the age of 17 from Slovenia and became the first choice goalkeeper at age 19. Despite all his achievements the 25-year-old is soft-spoken and rarely gives interviews.

He speaks louder on the field with his actions as he repeatedly bails out Atletico Madrid from the jaws of defeat time after time. His recent save against Real Betis went viral with many commenting about how he made a difficult save look easy.

In this era of outstanding goalkeepers’ including Gigi Buffon, c, avid De Gea and Manuel Neuer it is spectacular what Oblak has achieved in a short period of time. He became one of the fastest goalkeepers to claim 100 clean sheets, achieving this milestone in just 178 games.

He has also won the Zamora award for the best goalkeeper in the league for the past three seasons. Despite this Oblak does not seem to be getting the accolades he deserves.  This may be as a result of many believing that he is protected by a great defence built by Diego Simeone.

Last year he was not voted in the top 5 best goalkeepers in the world. Real Madrid’s KeylorNavas and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre terStegen made the list despite having inferior save percentage to the Slovenia shot-stopper.

He may not be getting the big awards but Slovenia and Atletico Madrid definitely value Oblak as a legend for both country and club.
