The 30 year old burst onto the international scene after his debut with the Slovenia National Football Team and he was being seen as the person to take the team forward in the absence of the enigmatic but eccentric Zlatko Zahovic. But this comparison did not become a burden for the youngster and he showed signs that he did have the capability and capacity to lead the side from the front as a leader should be able to.

His ability to take upon the mantle of leadership prompted the coach of the Slovenian national team to give him the captain’s armband and the team walked onto the pitch for all the matches in the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa behind him and he also led the side to its first and only victory in the World Cup that year as well.

Having played 63 times for the national team and scoring 5 goals, Robert Koren decided that he has had enough according to his family members and wanted to give the youngsters coming up the rank a chance to shine for the Slovenia National Football Team in his absence and announced his retirement from international football, a decision that has shocked the entire football fraternity all over the little European state of Slovenia.
